In a significant move towards modernising Scotland’s rail network, the East Kilbride to Glasgow line is undergoing a comprehensive £144 million electrification project.

This initiative, part of the Scottish Government’s broader decarbonisation strategy, aims to replace diesel trains with electric ones, offering a quieter, greener, and more reliable service for commuters. 

Key Upgrades and Infrastructure Developments

The project encompasses several major enhancements:

Electrification of the Line: Approximately 22 km of overhead power cables are being installed, transitioning the line from diesel to electric traction. 

Station Modernisations: Both East Kilbride and Hairmyres stations are receiving significant upgrades. East Kilbride’s new £9 million station features improved accessibility, waiting areas, and ticketing facilities. Hairmyres station has been transformed into a modern transport interchange, complete with a £7.2 million investment that includes park-and-ride facilities, bus services, and active travel connections. 

Track Enhancements: The double-track between East Kilbride and Hairmyres has been extended by 1.4 km, increasing capacity and operational robustness. 

These upgrades are expected to improve service reliability, reduce travel times, and encourage a shift from car to rail travel, aligning with Scotland’s climate change objectives. 

Community Benefits and Considerations

While the electrification project promises numerous benefits, it has not been without its challenges. The 16-week closure of the East Kilbride to Glasgow line from January to May 2025 caused significant disruption for commuters. Replacement bus services were provided, but many passengers expressed frustration over the extended travel times and inconvenience. 

Despite these temporary setbacks, the long-term benefits are anticipated to outweigh the inconveniences. The introduction of electric trains is expected to reduce carbon emissions, contributing to Scotland’s environmental goals. Additionally, the station upgrades aim to enhance the overall passenger experience, making rail travel a more attractive option for local residents.

Political Perspectives and Future Outlook

The electrification project has garnered support from various political figures. In a recent debate, Scottish Government ministers reaffirmed their commitment to electrifying rail lines, including the East Kilbride route, as part of a phased approach to decarbonise Scotland’s transport network. 

However, some opposition members have called for more transparency and accountability in the project’s implementation, urging the government to ensure that value-for-money and passenger satisfaction remain at the forefront of railway delivery in Scotland. 

Looking ahead, the successful completion of the East Kilbride electrification project could serve as a model for future rail upgrades across Scotland, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of transitioning to electric rail services.
