THE COMMUNITY TIMES

A new community-led initiative is encouraging men across East Kilbride to speak openly about their mental health and support one another through shared experiences.

Waist Not, Want Not, in partnership with EK Bootcamp & Fitness, has launched free Men’s Peer Support Mental Health and Wellbeing Sessions, creating a safe, non-judgemental environment where men can talk, listen, and connect.

The group meets every Thursday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Waist Not, Want Not, and is open to all men — no pressure, no judgement, just people supporting each other.

Craig from EK Bootcamp explained the motivation behind starting the group: “I started this men’s mental health group to make a difference — to create a safe space where men can open up, connect, and know they’re not alone. Whether you want to share your story or just listen, this is a place to find understanding, strength, and hope together.”

The sessions offer a blend of conversation and activity, including walks, gym sessions, and community outings such as fishing trips. The idea is to build both mental resilience and physical wellbeing, tackling the stigma that too often stops men from speaking about what’s really going on.

With loneliness and mental health struggles on the rise, particularly among men, projects like this play a crucial role in helping people reconnect and rediscover purpose. Research shows that men are less likely to seek help for their mental health — something Waist Not, Want Not is determined to change.

The atmosphere at the sessions is welcoming and supportive, with attendees encouraged to come as they are. It’s not about formal therapy or pressure to speak — it’s about being part of something positive, real, and understanding.

By combining fitness, friendship, and open discussion, the group is helping men look after their minds as much as their bodies. As the slogan goes: “Your Mind Matters. Your Health Matters. YOU Matter.”

For anyone thinking about joining, it’s simple — just turn up. You’ll be welcomed by people who understand and care.

Let’s build strength in both body and mind — together. 💪
